Short Trip to a Far Away Land

So on Sunday, Jared and I ventured to Fairfax to the Chinese Grocery. Upon arrival we found only 2 carts remaining and barely any room to move in the produce aisle. It was insane. I was amazed by the varieties and length of travel that some of these veggies took to get there. I did get some baby bok choy that was supper tasty. I also picked up some chop sticks (reuseable) that I used last night for cooking purposes and eating. They're like an extra set of tongs that are easier to clean.

Well Jared and I found some really interesting things at the "fish" counter. I think it more aptly name the live or almost alive counter.

Guess what's for sale?

Yes that's right, it's Frogs and Turtles.

Yes they were moving and jumping and frolicking in their last minutes and hours of life.

They also had yellow and white eels.

I passed on these offerings. I have eaten all of them though. I've had Unagi, or eel sushi. I've snacked on frogs legs. I've even eaten turtle soup. But I've never cooked it or seen it live before cooking.

Yikes. I did score some good and inexpensive Soy Sauce, Fish Sauce, Mirin and Toasted Sesame Oil. I also got some dumplings...yum.

I'll leave you with this departing shot of Vegetarian BBQ Sauce. What's wrong with this picture?

I find that image very incongruent.

The image itself is out of place for the post or in general?

I know this is going to sound nutty, but the swastika on the bbq sauce isn't the same as used by the Nazis--its a reverse image.

But there IS a connection to National Socialism. The answer lies in India. The bbq swastika is in fact a very old Hindu symbol (the meaning of which I forget, something to do with the four corners of the earth I think).

The whole Nazi "Aryan" nation thing originated in colonial studies of Indian culture, and early linguistics connected India and Germany in an arc of lineage. Hitler then modified (or reversed) and adopted the ancient Hindu swastika for his political imagery.

So, its understandable in an Asian market. And still super weird that anyone would bother to use it.
